Choosing the right health insurance plan for your business is one of the more consequential decisions you will make as an employer. Two of the most common options, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), each fall under the broader category of managed care and take meaningfully different approaches to delivering and pricing healthcare. HMOs typically offer lower premiums and streamlined billing but require members to work through a primary care physician for referrals. PPOs offer greater flexibility in choosing providers but often come with higher out-of-pocket costs.
