Is Your Nonprofit's Data Secure? Unveiling Vulnerabilities with Pen Testing

ARTICLE | March 28, 2025

Nonprofits have increasingly become targets of cybercriminals, who exploit vulnerabilities caused by tight budgets and smaller IT teams. Recent reports suggest that a significant proportion of charitable organizations have experienced at least one data breach in the past few years. While larger corporations may have the resources to mount sophisticated defenses, nonprofits often struggle to keep pace with evolving cyber threats. In many cases, information such as donor records, employee credentials, and organizational strategies attracts malicious actors seeking financial gain, sensitive data, or both.

Proactively identifying and mitigating security gaps through pen testing is a must to metigate. Nonprofits operate within tight constraints, and while the cost of pen testing may seem daunting, the aftermath of a breach is far more expensive. Legal fees, identity theft, data loss, and damage to an organization’s standing in the community can all exact a staggering toll. By making pen testing a regular component of cybersecurity efforts, nonprofits not only protect themselves from emerging threats but also protect the trust they have earned from donors, volunteers, and those they serve.
