The sudden absence of an executive leader can create a ripple effect throughout a nonprofit organization. It can jeopardize key donor relationships, derail ongoing projects, and disrupt day-to-day management. In one illustrative scenario, an organization that lost its long-standing executive director had to scramble to keep operations on track. Fortunately, because it had some contingency measures in place, the nonprofit assembled a search committee fairly quickly and found a new leader in just a few weeks.
