Taxpayers across the country have grown used to receiving IRS refunds and federal benefit payments by mail, sometimes counting on that physical check arriving in an envelope. However, the federal government is now embarking on a major transition away from paper checks in favor of electronic payments. This shift will come to a head on September 30, 2025, when the IRS and other federal agencies officially end the issuance of paper checks. The change is designed to lower costs, reduce fraud, and ensure taxpayers receive their funds more reliably.
